"Offered here is this amazing, Vintage, Brazilian Rosewood, 1947 Martin, 000-21 Guitar. This Guitar is one of the last years and models to have the much desired herringbone inlay as the backstripe seam. The current owner bought this guitar from the second owner in Dec. 2007, who is in his late 80.s. He owned this guitar since it was a year or two old. The story is that he owned a gas station in Los Angeles during the 1940.s, and in 1947 or 1948 the original owner of the 000-21 was working at this gas station. He borrowed money from the station owner, using the 000-21 as collateral. He subsequently left town and never returned to reclaim the guitar."
"The second owner seldom tried to play it, and a few years later he loaned the 000-21 to his father in Arkansas, who played the instrument in church until his death ten years later. The guitar was then returned to him in California. He kept it under the bed where it remained stored until shortly before being sold to the present owner in Dec 2007."
"As can be seen in the pictures, this guitar is in excellent condition and it needs nothing done to it. It did, however, have a small crack between the pickguard and the bridge. This is not unusual, and is caused by the curling and pulling of the original tortoise shell pickguard, which spreads the grain of the wood as the pickguard shrinks with time. This was professionally repaired and the original pickguard was neatly reattached. The guitar has been professionally set up and is extremely comfortable to play, and has the correct string action. The neck is very straight and does not require lowering of the original through-cut saddle to improve ease of playing. The finish is in very good to excellent original condition. The frets are original and have almost no wear. It has the original individually enclosed chrome buttoned tuning machines, and has the black with white dot bridge and end pins. The tone and balance are exceptional as would be expected with a Martin of this model and age. The strings are Martin Marquis, phosphor bronze, Light Gauge, and are virtually new."
"This guitar includes a new alligator hard shell case which replaced the ill-fitting, poor conditioned original. Although there was an original case, it was not an exact fit for the 000-21. It was an original for the "D" series Martin. As you can see by the pictures, the case and guitar are both gorgeous."
"According to the CF Martin Co. Records, the neckblock serial number of this 000-21 was stamped on May 21, 1947."
